Software was expensive. Now it's not. That changes everything.
73ai is an applied research project helping people embrace AI, with safety and control, for real economic value.
We don't just theorize. We build, ship, and learn.
The Shift
For decades, software was expensive to build. You needed teams, time, and money. That meant only problems big enough to justify the cost got solved. Entire categories of useful software never got built because the economics didn't work.
That constraint is dissolving. AI has collapsed the cost of building software. Problems that were too small before are now solvable. People can own their tools instead of renting them. You don't need to pay $5/month for a todo app and hand over your data to some company's servers.
This is a big deal, and we think most people haven't fully grasped what it means yet.
What We're Building
We work across three areas, each building on the last:
Personal Assistants
OpenBotKit: a kit for people who want to automate their life without building software. Safety and control first. No data sharing. Local models on the roadmap.
Developer Tools
Workbench, coding agents guide, code-context. For builders who want to make better software with AI.
Infrastructure
InfraLayer and InfraSync. Infrastructure simplified, from personal projects to enterprise.
Latest Research
Code Retrieval in Coding Agents
Why do coding agents work well on small projects but struggle with large codebases? We studied how different coding agents find and use code context.
